Hi Graham,

I agree. Building an effective business blog isn't easy and is a longterm investment of time and money.

The businesses I speak to can see the value in it, but are still hesitant due to the lack of an obvious ROI and the cost of employing a writer. Also, I think a blog's educative approach to marketing is still a bit foreign to some who've grown up with traditional advertising and mail shot campaigns.

I think the theory behind business blogging is sound. We just need some more well known, case book examples to help push it over the tipping point.

Even though blogging is increasing in popularity it's important to realise that over 90% of businesses that start a blog give it up within three months. The reason is they don't realise that blogging is publishing and that they need to set up editorial systems in order for it to succeed. Indeed, few businesses in my experience have yet to realise even that the Internet is a publishing medium and that means they need to treat it as such. Instead they treat it like a giant brochure which no-one wants to read. If they are to take up blogging seriously, companies also need to take up writing and editing seriously as well. Otherwise their blogs will fail to connect with their readers.

Nigel - I agree: 'promoting your expertise' and 'case study' might have been better choices of words. Unfortunately, there still seems to be a lot of people who like showing off their fluency in marketing speak and I don't think that's going to change anytime soon. At least it keeps us in a job translating it into English for them.

Hmm, I wouldn't listen to anyone who talked about an 'advocacy agenda' or a 'scenario situation'. This is yet more evidence, for me, of the disconnect between marketing and copywriting.
